Ask any South African about biltong and you’ll get a story. A dad slicing it on the kitchen counter, a bag passed around on a road trip, a friendly tussle over the last piece. But most packaged biltong today is made for shelf life, not for flavour, loaded with chemical preservatives, nitrites and additives nobody asked for. Hunt & Gather wanted to change that. The brief was to build a clean label brand for a new generation of snackers, at home and abroad, that celebrates real meat and real ingredients while giving a centuries-old craft the respect it deserves. Premium without being precious, honest without being boring.

We started with the name. Hunt & Gather harks back to a time when people lived on simple, real food. Meat, plants and fats, nothing artificial. Then we gave the brand a face. Utzi is inspired by Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,000-year-old hunter found in the Alps, so well preserved that scientists could tell his last meal was wild meat, grains and plants. No nitrites required. The identity pairs a rich forest green with a zesty lime that feels fresh, natural and a little playful, while clear, no-nonsense messaging lets the ingredients do the talking. Carried across packaging, spec sheets and retail materials, the result is a brand that honours the craft, keeps the label clean and owns its spot on shelf.
